The Sur University College (SUC) was founded in 2001. SUC is an intermediate English-language University College. It is an independent, nonprofit, equal-opportunity institution. SUC is accredited in Oman by the Oman Academy Accreditation Authority (OAAA). SUC is dedicated to education, research and community service in the Sultanate of Oman and the Gulf states.

Foundation Year : 2001

Sur University College was granted its operating license on 20th May 2001 and opened its doors to nearly 300 students on 1st October 2001.  The founder and Chairman is Sheikh Mubarak Bahwan, who is himself a 'Suri'.  Sheikh Bahwan had the vision to establish a University College within the region, based upon several key factors:

  • Since 1994, the Omani government has issued licenses for the establishment of private Colleges and Universities within the Sultanate.

  • This initiative reflects the growing importance of providing a high quality post education for high school graduates. This is in line with the government's Omanisation   program which aims to replace expatriate workers with qualified and skilled Omani nationals.

  • Previously the only higher education institution in Sur was the government-funded Teacher Training College which meant there was an ideal opportunity for creating the region's first private University College.

  • The Al Sharqiyyah region is the third largest in Oman in terms of population growth, economic prosperity and development. Such conditions provided employment opportunities which create a demand for competent staff with graduate qualifications that can now be sourced locally.

The government's requirement for private institutions to implement consistently high quality academic standards is achieved at present through an affiliation with international academic bodies. This has resulted in Sur University College forming a partnership with Bond University. SUC also has an affiliation with the American University in Cairo for the Engineering Degree it presently offers. It is expected to offer MBA in human resources management with the Sunderland University in Fall 2015.
